grasshopper

thoughts on that crazy poem that just looks something like a word search gone wrong.  Skim to the middle of the article where you see a familiar poem.

This is NOT on the final... just interesting.

i find it interestin that Cummings tries so hard to work outside the box and make his poems odd.he intentionally capitalizes and breaks up words in order to show their importance and to create a different looking poem. and eventhough this might look odd to the reader to him it's normal because it has become his style. he has become famous by his "misuse" of the conventions of the english language. however looking closely at his work, like this grasshopper one, he really isn't writting randomly. he has his own set of rules that he follows which is why he really isnt working out of the box. he's working "inside the box" but the box is his own not society's.

  2. I really like what Kristen said about him working inside his own box. He isn't just writing random words with random punctuation for the sake of departing from convention. He has a purpose and there is an apparent "method to his madness"; if you read carefully and compare his poems you can see this. He is expressing himself and his beliefs through what at first appears to be nonsense and incorrect grammar. When looked at closely, cummings' poetry actually makes sense and his unconventional writing enhances the theme and content of his poems.
